At some point or another, I must have had to shoot a whole bunch of photos in and around the library. Some of the film had names on the sleeves, most didn’t. Kent Heise is pretending to futz around with a movie projector above.
No one looks happy in this shot
I have absolutely no clue what is going on in these group shots in the library. Everyone has a solemn expression. I think they must have been shot at night, judging by the windows. I’m pretty sure I can pick our Ruth Ann Seabaugh, Mike Seabaugh and Jackie Knehans.
Little kids mixed in
These little kids aren’t in high school, obviously, but they were part of the film marked “Library Series” This girl’s name must have been Kim.
Photo Gallery
Rather than making a bunch of guesses, I’ll throw all of the pictures into a photo gallery. As always, click on any image to make it larger, then click on the left or right side of the photo to move through the gallery.
Steinhoff family doing Olympic Distance Triathlon
This has nothing to do with the library photos, but I thought I’d toss in a family update. Wife Lila and sons Matt and Adam are going to compete in a team triathlon in Miami Sunday. Adam is going to do the 6.2-mile running leg; Matt will do the 24.8-mile biking portion and Lila is going to swim .9 miles in Biscayne Bay. (It should be a piece of cake for her. She’s been swimming between a mile and two miles several times a week for several months.)
I’m going to watch them go by.
Matched a magazine on the rack to November 1965.
Those card catalog pieces of furniture are worth a pretty penny now.
Image 13 teacher I believe is Mrs. Carter.
Someone over on Facebook was wondering what happened to Walter Stafford.
Walter was one of the brightest and quietest guys I knew in school. He was the epitome of “gentle soul.”
I did a Google Archive search of Missourian stories about him. It reads like a Who’s Who of Achievers at Central High School.
The last story I could find was in 1969, when he graduated from the University of Detroit with a bachelor’s degree in finance and economics. He was president of Alpha Kappa Psi; candidate for Most Outstanding Greek Man and candidate for Most Outstanding Senior. He was named to the Dean’s List. He was going to pursue a master’s degree in political science and business admin.
Google Archive searches can be tricky, so there may be more info on him, but that’s all that popped up just searching for his name.
Newspaper stories about Viola, his sister, were equally populated with accolades.
Update: Bill East posted a note on Facebook with a link to Walter’s Obit:
Dr. Walter J. Stafford, son of Minnie Stafford and the late Mitchell D. Stafford, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at his home in Puerto Rico. He was 58.
He was born March 21, 1946, in Cape Girardeau. He graduated from Central High School in 1965. He attended the University of Detroit, where he received a bachelor of science degree in economics and political science. He later received master’s and doctorate degrees from Montpellier College in Maine.
Dr. Stafford taught business classes at Detroit Business Institute 10 years. He was then promoted to become the institute’s director of education, a position he held five years. At the time of his death, Dr. Stafford was a professor at Keiser College in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
He is survived by his mother, Minnie; four sisters, Ann Shares and Regina Jones, all of Cape Girardeau, Viola Stafford of St. Louis, Denise Warren of Overland Park, Kan.; five brothers, James of Viera, Fla., Bill and Eugene of Detroit, Joseph of Cebu City, Philippines, and Ben of Jackson.
His father, Mitchell; and brothers Lindsey, John and Mitchell Jr., preceded him in death.
Yes, that is Mrs. Carter…nice lady and a good teacher too! She was my 10th grade English teacher after I requested to leasve Mrs. Fulsom’s class.
I think “Rat” Wesley Trapp is standing next to her with and unknown to me guy and then Steve Neal.
J d Crosnoe is in picture 2#…I have not seen him since HS…wow!
Janet Zickfield is in the fourth picture–love that little bow in her hair!
I agree Terry she was a very nice lady & an excellent teacher…
Lila, I’m very proud of you. Good luck on your.9 swim. I hope your boys do well also on your team triathlon.
Since the one picture has JD Crosnoe, they had to be taken in 1963-64. JD graduated in 64.
The Steinhoff triathlon story made me think of a fella I went to high school (Cape Central) with who ran Cross Country. Are you related to Darrell Steinhoff?
Darrell was my cousin Jon’s son. He was quite a bit younger than I was.
I was a 1965 graduate from Cape Girardeau. Joined the USAF and parents moved from Cape to Louisiana. Still have some year books!!
