Egypt Mills or Pecan Grove?

Question from Bob Reese

Dear Ken and Group,
I have the above old picture and thought maybe it was in Egypt Mills but it looks kind of like the picture you posted of Pecan Grove School.
What do you think?
Thanks, Bob Reese, Tucson

Pecan Grove School

I’m on the road and don’t have access to any photos that show another angle of the Pecan Grove School, but both buildings look like they have three windows. The roof on the photo Bob sent looks like wood shake; I think I remember Pecan Grove as being tin, but I’m not sure. It could have been replaced over its 100-plus year life.

Does anyone know if the Egypt Mills School is still standing? If so, I may take a run out there.

  1. From the pictures it appears that they are two differnt buildings. The distance between the roof eave and windows are differnet.

  2. Looks like differnt style windows too,I imagine that the roof is not original on the Pecan Grove school. But the two building are from diferent eras.

  3. It is NOT Liberty School. I have 20-30 old pictures — my father and others went there and I know that building well — in fact, I have the front doors and several window frames from there when it was torn down. I will be in touch about the visit to the area north of Pecan Grove. We have not worked there this summer and the small plants have begun growing again. I have several good suggestions for going — sometime next week if that works for you.

  4. These are pictures of 2 different buildings. On the Egypt Mills picture there 12 siding slats per window. On the Pecan Grove picture there are 17 slats per window….Ray Boren

  5. Check with the Cape County Archives in Jackson. They have been collecting information, stories and photos of the old schools in the county. They may be able to identify the building for you.

    1. Barbara,

On the way through Jackson tonight after eating at Mario’s Pasta, I commented to Lila and Mother that I was going to have to make a pilgrimage to the Cape County Archives on this trip.

I’m approaching the age where I’m not sure it’s save to visit places with Archives in their name. The words from The Eagles’ Hotel California come to mind:

      “‘We are programmed to receive.
You can check-out any time you like,
      But you can never leave!”

  6. I am currently in St. Louis and my sister looked at the picture, She said it looks like the old Egypt Mills Lutheran Church. She and my brother lived there until they wre 10 and 12 (long before I arrived on the scene). We couldn’t see the people clear enough to recognize any of them, though.

  7. Ken,

I have a booklet about one room schools in Cape County. I bought it at a flea market, or picked it up from Goodwill. The author, I believe was Bob White. This booklets includes pictures, stories, interviews, and other facts about Cape county’s old schools. I will refind this booklet and share copies if you are interested.

    1. Mindy,

I’d love to get a copy. It’s always good to have reference material around. Like my former librarian wife says, “You don’t have to know everything; you just have to know where to look or who to ask.”

  8. Thanks for all input abt pecan grove school.
Maybe one picture is of one side of bldg and the other picture is the other side?
Please post pictures of Liberty School.

I know that Robert L Taylor is in left side of photo.

  9. Ken, I finally found the booklet about Cape County Schools. It has several pages and wondered how you wanted a copy. I could scan and send or photo copy and send to you? I think you would find this book very interesting and it might help you somehow. Let me know. Again, Thank YOU for all you give to us! Mindy

    1. Mindy,

Thanks for sending the booklet. I’m sure it’ll be a valuable research resource. Where did you order it? I’ll publish a review and put in where it can be ordered for the folks who would like one. It’s Copyright 1985, so I can’t publish it in its entirety.

  10. Dear guys, Thanks for keeping this question about my picture vs others going to clarify this question once and for all if possible.
