CHS 2015 Reunion

Folks from the 1960s decade of Central High School classes gathered at the Arena building for a mixer Friday night. We’re getting to be a grayer group, but Terry Hopkins can still don his letter sweater without splitting the seams. Others – too many of us – are no longer around.

I kept looking around wishing I could see Bill East, who was at the 2010 reunion. Alas, he was one of the good guys taken way too early by cancer in 2012.

I apologize for the quality of some of the photos. The building was dark as the inside of a whale’s belly, and the lighting color balance was all over the charts. Maybe I should say the fuzzy pictures were a feature to make us look better rather than a technical drawback.

Solving for the Unknown

What do the numbers 1965, 2015, Miss Rixman and X all have in common?

They have to do with solving for the unknown.

Staring into the eyes of my 50th Central High School Reunion weekend, the unknown I can’t solve – like X in Miss Rixman’s algebra class – is where in the heck has half a century gone?

Queen Carol and King Mike

I’m 87.6% sure that the royal couple are Carol Rawlings and Mike Price.

They were CHS Class of 1964, but I didn’t find the photo in the 1963, 1964 or 1965 Girardots. There were crop marks on the margins of the photo that looked like it might have run in The Missourian, but I couldn’t find it in the Google archives.

Sorry about the crease at the bottom. The print must have been bent in storage.

The Missing Art Student

When I took this photo in March of 1966, five students were in the picture, along with their teacher, Mrs. Edna Glenn. If you look at the crop marks on the margins of the print, though, the poor guy on the right was cut out.

I don’t know who you are, but, here, 49 years later, you have made it into print. (Click on the photo to make it larger.)

The photo caption in the March 5, 1966, Missourian said, “More than 35 local high school pupils have entered an art contest sponsored this weekend by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs and the Hallmark Card Company. Here, four Central High School pupils and Mrs. Edna Glenn, Central art instructor, take some of the art works to the KFVS Studio, 324 Broadway, where the exhibit is being held. The pupils are, from left, Miss Susan Welker, Miss Linda Davis, John Young and Miss Holly Lueder. Mrs. Glenn is seated inside the car.
