Albert Hall Dormitory

When I saw Fred Lynch’s blog with Frony’s pictures of some coeds on the steps of Albert Hall in 1960, I remembered seeing photos of those steps in Mother’s scrapbook.

I wasn’t sure that it WAS Albert Hall, but that’s the way Mother had the photo labeled, and the concrete detail on the right of the picture matches Frony’s shot.

Fred had another photo from 1960 showing the dorm being razed. (SEMO is great at flattening landmarks.) Fred noted that the dorm for women opened March 7, 1905. It was built by a private corporation, and acquired by the state in 1912. It served for 54 years.

Mother graduated from Advance High School in 1938, so these photos of her friends was taken after that.

Cape County Courthouse

I posted photos and a video of the clock in the Jackson Courthouse this summer, but forgot that I was holding another stack of other photos. Thanks to IT director Eric McGowen and public works director Don McQuay for taking the time to let me poke around in the recesses of the Cape County Courthouse. It was one hot day when these pictures were taken, but I’d rather have done them in the summer than when the windchill was in the teens.

Softball Trophy Winners

This group won a softball trophy in 1965, but I couldn’t read the trophy to see what place it was. I recognize Sally Wright second from left in the front row and Yvonne Askew third from left in the second row. A couple other faces look familiar, but I’m not going to make a guess.

Trinity Lutheran School Cafeteria

I could have sworn The Missourian ran school menus, but I poked around for several weeks of old papers and couldn’t find them. I don’t have a lot of memories of the Trinity Lutheran School cafeteria. I managed to convince my parents to let me slip off the school grounds most days to eat at Wayne’s Grill.

The black and white photos were taken February 13, 1967.

Keep Sloppy Joes away from me

I had a weakness for Sloppy Joes, described in Wikipedia as “an American dish of ground beef, onions, sweetened tomato sauce or ketchup and other seasonings, served on a hamburger bun.”

I was so fond of them, in fact, I kind overdid it one day just before going out to the playground. The resulting spewage spoiled the sandwich for me forever. It’s not quite as bad as my Dr. Herbert wooden stick phobia, but it ranks a close second.

This is what the cafeteria area looked like in 2010.
